- Q: How can the end gaps of the piston ring set be checked and corrected before installation on Mercury Capri?A:If it is known that the Piston ring side clearance is right then the ring end gaps must be measured before new piston rings are fitted. Organize the piston/connecting rod assemblies and the new ring sets in a way that you pair a particular piston with a specific cylinder particularly while measuring the end gap and assembling the engine. Slide the top ring into the first cylinder aligning the ring with the cylinder block by means of piston head and force the ring so that it is barely touching the bottom of the cylinder at the service limit of the ring travel. To determine the end gap, place slip feeler gauges between the ring's ends until one that fits within the gap is obtained; when in place, it should just drag slightly.
