Mercury Capri Oil Pan

The Mercury Capri Oil Pan is designed to store the engine's oil, ensuring sufficient lubrication to keep the engine functioning properly. In a typical wet sump arrangement, the Oil Pan is placed immediately under the block where oil collects after flow for the next pump cycle. The sump fits well in major Mercury coupes, but because engineers had to mount the engine higher for it to fit, they added baffles so fluid would not slosh from the pickup when cornering hard. Due to the sustained lateral forces faced by high performance variants of the Capri, a dry sump option appeared which replaced the deep Oil Pan with a shallow tray, while the action of twin pumps ensured oil was sent to the external tank, preventing starvation. Mercury cars could corner harder without risk of damaging them despite being more complex. Every style of the Capri Oil Pan comes with a drain plug for easy fluid change and a gasket that seals tight against the block to prevent leaking. The maximum distinction between the two styles over the years is still the location of capacity, deep in the wet design and remote in the dry. That is how much Mercury and Capri owners love the Oil Pan; it quietly protects their engines mile after mile.

Mercury Capri Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan and Oil Pump in 2.8L V6 engine on Mercury Capri?
    A:
Now in order to remove the oil pan follow the below steps, The first thing is that you need to detach the negative side of the battery cable. Take off the fan shroud bolts, position the shroud above fan and slide it on the fan. If necessary for access, raise the car on hydraulic jack and put it on the jack stands, do not work under car with just a jack. Remove the old engine oil and also the drain plug of the engine. Remove the bolts that hold the steering gear to the Grossmember and place it aside in a way that it will be supported by the frame so that you can have the best access to the oil pan. Lose the engine mount nuts and place a jack underneath the oil pan on top of a piece of timber. Lift the engine slightly, place two pieces of 2 X 4 timber on the engine supports and remove the jack. Take out the four bolts holding the rear K-braces, and the three bolts holding the oil pan mounting. Place the pan down to the frame and using a rubber mallet gently hit the bottom of the pan if it gets stuck. Drop down to the oil pan level to remove the oil pump and pick-up screen attaching bolts; then lower down the oil pump, intermediate shaft, pick-up tube into the oil pan; finally, remove the oil pan, perhaps rotating the crank-shaft to provide the necessary clearance. For installation you may have to use gasket scraper or putty knife and remove all the gasket material and sealant from the main pan, block, and front cover, the clean the surfaces fit for mating with lacquer thinner or acetone to ensure the bolt holes are clean. Inspect the oil pan flange for warping and particularly around the bolt holes, and if it is warped, it must be bent back to shape. Old rubber seals must be taken out from the rear main bearing cap & engine front cover, the grooves in which have also to be cleaned and new rubber seals must be installed through gasket contact adhesive by holding them and then a bead of RTV sealant should be applied to the block-to-seal junctions. Apply gasket contact adhesive to new gaskets and fit the engine, locate the oil pump and the inlet tube to the oil pan and make sure that the intermediate shaft is fitted to the oil pump. Now, it would be a good idea to set up the oil pump and subsequently the oil pan before fastening a few of the bolts in a particular pattern to the right measure of torque. The other that follow are a reversal of the removal process, followed by the installation of an all new oil filter and topping off of the engine with oil before starting and inspecting for leaks.
