It takes the electrical charge from the battery and sends it to the alternator, enabling the engine to start. If the Ford starter wears out, it can't receive or send a charge, so the car is effectively dead and will not start.

    Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 2004 and later models, unbolt the frame-vibration damper, which looks like a small dumbbell, for starter access. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the starter solenoid cover if equipped. Disconnect the large cable from the terminal on the starter and the solenoid terminal connections. Remove the starter mounting bolt and nut, remove the electrical connectors, the upper mounting bolt and the lower mounting nut, then detach the starter from the transmission bellhousing and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.

After that, disconnect the starter ground cable from the lower starter mounting stud, remove the starter motor mounting fasteners, and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Next, disconnect the wiring from the terminals on the starter motor solenoid by removing the protective cover from the B+ terminal, taking off the nut to disconnect the battery cable from the B+ terminal, and removing the other nut to disconnect the starter cable from the S terminal. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts to detach the starter motor from the engine; the starter on V6 engines is held by two bolts, while the starter on VB engines is secured by three bolts. For 3.7L V6 models with automatic transmissions, remove the automatic transmission cooler line bracket mounting nut and move the bracket back out of the way. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that the starter mounting bolts are tightened to the specified torque.
