Disconnect the negative battery cable. Apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. On 2.0L SPI engines, remove the air cleaner outlet tube from the throttle body for more access to the starter. On Zetec-E engines, remove the MAF sensor, PCV pipe and the upper bolts. Raise the vehicle, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the lower bolts. On 2.3L and 2005 through 2007 2.0L models, unbolt and set aside the power steering pump without disconnecting the lines. Remove the oil pressure sending unit and seal the opening. On 2008 and later models, remove the wiring harness from the stud on the starter. Also remove the power steering bracket nut, then move the power steering tube and bracket aside. On Duratec engines, remove the intake manifold. Unscrew the mounting bolts from the starter, then release the starter from the dowels on the transaxle housing and withdraw from the engine. The starter is in close quarters, you may have to angle it to withdraw it. Unscrew the nuts and disconnect the wiring from the starter as the starter is being withdrawn. Installation is a reversal of removal. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque settings.
