2000 Ford Ranger Crankshaft Pulley Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the crankshaft pulley and front crankshaft seal in a 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on a 2000 Ford Ranger?
A: For the removal of the component, you will only have to twist out the cable for the negative terminal of the battery, the drivebelt and the engine cooling fan/shroud assembly. Lift the car and support it on jackstands, then to release the power steering fluid cooler bolts and swing it to the side but do not disconnect the fluid hoses. Subsequently, loosen and pull out the crankshaft pulley bolt and in order to remove the center bolt of the crankshaft pulley, use a breaker bar in combination with an appropriately sized socket; discard the old bolt with the strap and use a new bolt to replace it. Secure the pulley in position with a strap or a wrench that is made from a chain and a shop rag or an old drive belt should be put round the pulley before applying the bolt type puller to remove the pulley from the crankshaft where an adapter must be used where necessary to avoid straining or damaging the pulley. To remove the crankshaft front oil seal use a seal puller to do so while being careful not to harm the crankshaft or seal bore, clean the latter as well to ensure its condition and check for nicks or gouges. If necessary, then the use of a repair sleeve is possible for the restoration of the sealing surface. Before installing the new sealer, apply clean engine oil on the lip of the sealant and then force it into the bore with a socket or a pipe turning the open side towards the engine. Use clean engine oil and lubricate the sealing surface of the hub, then properly fit the crankshaft pulley/damper using a special tool and fit a new centre bolt to the required tightening torque. These are dominantly used on the Woodruff key slot where silicone sealant will be applied to complete the process as well as performing the reversed order of the removal process.
