Q:
How to diagnose starter problems? Posted by Customer
A:
Before diagnosing starter problems, ensure that the battery is fully charged. If the starter motor does not turn when the switch is operated, check that the shift lever is in Neutral or Park. Verify that the battery is charged and all cables at the battery and starter relay/solenoid terminals are secure. If the starter motor spins but the engine does not turn over, the drive assembly in the starter motor may be slipping and the starter motor will need to be replaced. If the starter motor does not operate but the starter relay/solenoid clicks, the issue may lie with the battery, starter relay/solenoid contacts, or starter motor connections. If the starter relay/solenoid does not click when the ignition switch is actuated, there may be an open circuit or a defective relay/solenoid. To check the starter relay/solenoid circuit, remove the push-on connector from the relay solenoid wire and ensure that the connection is clean and secure. If the connections are good, test the operation of the relay/solenoid with a jumper wire. If the starter motor now operates, the starter relay/solenoid is functioning correctly, and the problem may be in the ignition switch, Neutral start switch, or starting circuit wiring. If the starter motor still does not operate, replace the starter relay/solenoid. If the starter motor cranks the engine at a slow speed, check that the battery is fully charged and all terminal connections are clean and tight. Also, inspect the connections at the starter relay/solenoid and battery ground, ensuring that eyelet terminals are not easily rotated by hand. Additionally, check for a short to ground and consider the possibility of a partially seized engine or incorrect viscosity oil.
