    Q:
How do electric rear view car mirrors operate and what steps should be taken to troubleshoot them on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
Most electric rear view mirrors utilize two motors for adjustments, There I corner for either the up or down movement and another for side to side movements . The control switch of the present invention consists of a selector for applying voltage to the left side mirror or the right side mirror. Now switch on the 'ignition' and start the car but do not go for a drive, lower the windows and move the 'mirror control switch' both through all functions for both the mirrors and listen to hear the noises of the electric motors. If they are audibly and the mirror glass does not move it is probable that a problem with the drive mechanism has occurred and to solve it the mirror has to be removed and disassembled. If the mirror fails to respond as expected or makes no sound at all it will be necessary to check the fuse. If the fuse is good, leave connected the mirror control switch but do not unsolder it, connect the ignition ON and check voltage to the switch, one of the terminals has to light up. If none, look for a open or short in the wire between the fuse panel and the switch. If voltage is present, then remove the switch and perform the continuity check on all positions, if there is no continuity, switch may be replaced. When communications with the switch have been restored, identify the wire with another wire tied to ground and place a jumper wire between it and the ground, if the mirror works fine, then the bad ground connection has to be fixed. If the mirror is still non-functional, take it of and test for voltage to the mirror wires with the ignition on and the selector switch in the correct position, you should have voltage to one of the switch-to-mirROr wires in any position except for the neutral 'off' position. When the volts is missing any position, check the circuit for the opens and shorts. If voltage is verified, use jumper wires to check mirror on an independent test bench and replace if it goes off this test.
