Q:
How to replace the front, intermediate, and transverse cables in a Lincoln Town Car? Posted by Customer
A:
For 1989 and earlier models, to replace the front cable, the vehicle should be raised and supported on jackstands, the parking brake fully released, and the adjusting nut at the adjuster loosened. Disconnect the cable from the adjuster bracket and remove the retaining clip from the body. From inside the vehicle, disconnect the cable from the pedal assembly and remove it through the floorpan. To install, insert the cable through the floorpan holes and attach it to the control assembly inside the vehicle, ensuring the grommet is properly seated. Underneath the vehicle, fasten the cable to the adjuster bracket. For the intermediate cable, remove the adjusting nut from under the vehicle, disconnect the cable ends at the left rear and transverse cable, and remove the cable and adjuster bracket assembly, keeping track of the order of parts. Install the equalizer assembly and reconnect the cable ends. For the transverse cable, remove the adjusting nut, disconnect the cable ends at the right rear of the transverse cable and the intermediate cable, remove any retaining clips or brackets, and install the retaining clips or brackets holding the cable to the body before reconnecting the cable ends and reinstalling the adjusting nut. For 1990 and later models, the front cable requires a fabricated special tool to disconnect it from the spring-loaded automatic take-up reel. Trim panels need to be removed to access the control mechanism, and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and fuse box should be removed. The vehicle should be raised, the parking brake released, and with an assistant's help, the fabricated reel spring retaining tool is used to release tension on the parking brake cable. Disconnect the front cable from the rear cable at the connector and from the take-up reel at the control mechanism. Remove screws retaining the left inner fender panel, expose the point where the cable enters the frame, and remove the cable from the control mechanism and dash panel. Install the new cable, connect it to the take-up reel and rear cable, and remove the reel spring retaining tool. Apply and manually release the parking brake, and verify its proper operation. For the intermediate and rear cables, ensure the parking brake is released, raise the vehicle's rear, disconnect the rear cable from the actuating lever, and disconnect the left and right rear cables from the intermediate cable. If replacing the intermediate cable, disconnect it from the front cable connector. Installation is the reverse of removal, and when reattaching the two rear cables to the intermediate cable, ensure the left cable is on top, and the right rear cable is attached to the rear end of the connector.
