After 1995 vehicles, turn off the power by disconnecting the negative then positive cable from the battery, wait two minutes before starting. Make sure the steering wheel is tightly locked in place before working, to stop the airbag-mounted contact from getting broken. To get at the instrument cluster, remove the center console, then take off 3 layers - the lower instrument panel cover, the reinforcement panel, and the instrument cluster bezel. First, slide your hand underneath the passenger side of the lower insulation panel and push out all the plastic pushpins. Then get rid of the rivets before you can work on the steps after. Push down the glove box, press the release buttons, lower it down to access the right screw, then unscrew the rest from the front. Unscrew the two screws that hold the passenger airbag, wiggle it away from the instrument panel, disconnect the electrical wire carefully and handle it gently. Unscrew the center trim panel screws with care. Take out the radio unit by leaving the heater/air conditioning control in place. By taking off the bolts at the right of the throttle pedal, you can push down the lower instrument panel brace, then unlock the bolts under the steering column to lower and stabilize it. Remove the six bolts keeping the fuse panel cover in place. The first two are found by sticking your hand at the left edge of the instrument panel, then removing two more off the lower right side of the instrument panel. Take out the de-icing grills, and unscrew the clips that hold the top edge of the instrument panel. Create space by gently pushing the instrument panel to hand and unharness all electrical connectors and wiring keepers. If you own a 1997 model or later, you can keep the harness connected; just remove the cowl wiring at two locations - the brake pedal position switch and where all electrical harness connectors meet. After you put everything back in place, remember to reconnect the battery only when all electrical connections are firmly locked, most importantly the one for the passenger airbag.
