2012 Ford Fusion Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should the rear crankshaft seal be replaced in the V6 engine on 2012 Ford Fusion?
A: The crankshaft rear seal and retainer cannot be replaced individually as on 2.7L engines the two are combined and therefore must be replaced together. The one-piece rear Crankshaft Seal is inserted into a rear Crankshaft Seal carrier which is placed at the rear side of the block. In large cars with 3.0L engines, the transaxle has to be taken out; in 2.7L and 3.5L engines models the engine should be taken out and has to be supported on an engine crane. It is unbolted and pulled out while on the 3.0L engines, there is need of seal removal tool in order to extract the rear seal. For the 2.7L or 3.5L engines, one has to remove the CKP sensor and the sensor ring, as well as the bolts of the Crankshaft Seal carrier to the block. In three fifty liter engines there are two bolts which join the oil pan to the carrier and they must be removed and placed in the holes beside them in the carrier to force the carrier off the engine while tightening the bolts. The mating surface for the Crankshaft Seal carrier on the cylinder block as well as the crankshaft should be cleaned, especially everything next to the crankshaft must be polished, any edges that are raised, or burrs on the crankshaft must be removed because they could cause the failure of the seal. The inside lip of the new seal should be lightly coated with clean engine oil and a thin and, long lasting plastic strip or a cut part of the plastic material of a beverage bottle can serve as the liner for the seal. After having put in the plastic seal liner, the new seal should then be inclined and placed on the crankshaft touching surface. Special seal installer or large socket and small hammer can be used to stud in the seal. For 2.7L and 3.5L engines the following is important, the Crankshaft Seal carrier bolts should be inserted into the carrier and only tightened until tight enough to be tightened by the finger while positioning the carrier of the bottom of the seal carrier in correct position to that of the bottom edge of the engine block. The plastic liner or tool should be withdrawn to enable the new seal to have a proper contact with the crankshaft mating surface, then, the Crankshaft Seal carrier bolts should be tightened in turn, left to right. Last but not least, it is possible to inspect for signs of oil leakage if the engine is running, for a start.
