2001 Ford Ranger Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Camshaft in 4.0L pushrod V6 engine on 2001 Ford Ranger?
A: Cam lobe wear can be checked through measuring of lobe lift before the removal of the camshaft where the valve covers and the rocker arm assembly should be removed but the pushrods retained. Turn the number one piston to TDC in the compression stroke and install a dial indicator to the engine such that its plunger will touch the first pushrod. Centre the dial indicator and start rotating the crankshaft slowly until the pointer stops and starts to move the other way; this is the maximum cam lobe lift. This measurement should be taken and with the piston back at TDC-do this for both valves and again make certain each piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. When the above-mentioned checks have been done, look at the results and see that if any of the lobe lift is below 0.005-inch this that cam lobe wear has taken place and thus the need for buying a new camshaft. For removal, the negative battery cable is disconnected and the cooling system and the engine oil drained in addition to the drivebelt, engine, spark plug wires and ignition coil pack, alternator, valve covers and intake manifold and sounders and exceptables are removed rocker arms, pushrods, valve lifters, oil pan, timing chain covers and timing chain and sprockets. As for the Camshaft, dispense with the camshaft thrust plate bolts and the thrust plate, then, while supporting the camshaft, slowly pull it out of the block in order not to harm the bearings. After cleaning the camshaft, apply your finger or any comer on the surface of the bearing journals to see if It feels smooth or rough, and find out the inside diameter of each camshaft bearing. Inspect and measure the camshaft bearing journals for compatibility with wear or out-of round and in case they are worn should be replaced. Checking the camshaft lobes for signs of wear and also ensuring that the oil ways are free. For installation, with regard to the camshaft, it is necessary to lubricate the bearing journals and lobes, then placing the assembly under it, camshaft supporting it, after that, the thrust plate should also be coated with assembly lube and after that it should be installed and the bolts tightened to the given torque. He/She should then reverse the removal process and the camshaft position sensor should be in place if necessary.
