  This is a complex process which involve using special equipment and the extraction of the engine from a vehicle, though concentrating on the step of extracting the camshafts together with the camshaft bearing caps. It deserves to recall that it is necessary to collect all the required instruments at first. Start with the removal of the valve covers after which follow the process of removing the rocker arms and the valve lash adjusters followed by the removal of the camshaft sprockets and the timing chains from the camshafts. Bolt a dial indicator to the crankshaft and zero it on No. 1 cylinder's intake camshaft sprocket; measure camshaft endplay of each camshaft-if clearance is over limit-replace camshaft or cylinder head. The bearing cap bolts should be loosened with 6 of 1/4-turn each in reverse order so that they can be removed by hand After that, remove the bearing caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head You need to be very careful so that you do not get confused with the two camshafts or their components. Check for wear on cam lobes and bearing journals visually; measure the journal diameter of each camshaft and the lift of each camshaft lobe with milimeter micrometer and compare the measurement to the normal reading. Clean the camshaft bearing surfaces, insert the camshaft it in position without oil, apply Plastigage and torque the caps to the number stated without rotating the camshaft. After having taken off the caps, this should be done to compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale. If the clearance is excessive or if any diameter of the journal is short of the manufacturer's standard, then replace the camshaft or the cylinder head if required. Last but not the least, remove the Plastigage gently lest it scratch the journals. If the lash adjusters or rocker arms were removed, replace them in their previous positions; then smear moly-based engine assembly lubricant over the camshaft lobe and bearing journal, and fit the camshaft(s). The camshaft caps need to be fitted in the right position then the bolt will be tightened to the appropriate torque and the process ends by undoing the process followed to remove them.
