- Q: How to remove and install the oil pump in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on 1998 Ford Ranger?A: In order to get to the lower and upper oil pan sections it is necessary to mechanically remove the engine from the car. Subsequently, the bolts of the oil pump must be loosened for the pump removal off the engine and next step is to pull the OD of the oil pump intermediate driveshaft. During installation, one of the pump ports has to be filled with clean engine oil and the pump rotated by hand in order to charge the pump. Before the oil pump drive can engage to the intermediate drive shaft, the end with the arrows has to be put in first engaging the oil pump drive while the travel limit clip should be situated nearer the camshaft position sensor end of the shaft fitting tightly over the non machined section on the intermediate drive shaft. The oil pump should then be fitted onto the block with a new gasket and the splines of the oil pump have to engage with the driveshaft before tightening of the oil pump bolts to the recommended torque is done. The rest of the installation goes contrary to that of removal so to say. Once the installation has been done, the engine has to be run to check whether the normal oil pressure has returned and if it does not do so the engine has to be shut of immediately because running an engine with low oil pressure is very detrimental.
