1997 Ford Ranger Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pump in SOHC four cylinder engine on 1997 Ford Ranger?
A: On the 1993 and the 1994 models the whole engine is to be dismantled in order to get at the oil pump. Start by the oil pan, then the oil pump and the pick-up screen mounting bolts will need to be removed to have the pump off the engine block. If the pump is assumed to have problems or in cases of the engine overhaul, replace it to avoid any harm to the engine. Before installation perform a wysiwyg by holding the pump with the pick-up tube uppermost and pouring clean oil into the inlet screen and turning the pump driveshaft until oil comes out of the outlet. Place INTO of the pump on the location against the auxiliary shaft gear in the engine block, install the pump after tightening the bolts with the proper torque. Return the oil pan, replace it and pour the right amount and quality of oil into the engine then start the engine, ensure oil pressure comes up after 10-15 seconds; if not switch of the engine as this may cause a lot of harm to your vehicle. Last but not least check for oil leakage. In the case of the 1995 and later models, this starts with the removal of the timing belt and in a preliminary step, loosening the oil pump sprocket bolt while, if necessary, immobilizing the sprocket in position. Undo the sprocket and key, pull the wires of the camshaft position sensor and unscrew the sensor. The oil pump assembly requires the removal of mounting bolts and wiggling the oil pump free without deforming any seal area and extract the pump as well as its gasket. Remove any deposits from the front side of the oil pump and the mating surface on the cylinder block, also make sure this passage at the back of the oil pump bore is open. The new O-rings and a gasket must be put onto the oil pump, after you put 8 ounces of engine oil into the inlet passage in order to prime it, you need then to install the pump without losing the primer oil. Come to a small end, as with the oil pump mounting bolts and tighten them properly, insert the key in the shaft put the sprocket and tighten the bolt to the respective torque. Examine the level of the engine oil with the dipstick and add as required, but to finish pumping oil to the oil pump, connect an end of it to a drill motor and rotate until you reach oriented resistance. Replace the camshaft position sensor and plug in the electrical connector, then take the oil pump sprocket and rotate it until the mark aligns with that on the camshaft, crankshafts and oil pump sprockets when positioned at TDC before putting the timing belt and outer cover.
