    Q:
How to check and replace brake light switch on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
The brake light switch illuminates the rear brake lights when the brake pedal is applied and is referred to as the brake on-off (or BOO) switch, functioning as a digital information switch for the powertrain control module. Located at the upper end of the brake pedal, at the connection between the pedal pin and the power brake booster pushrod, access to the switch and connector requires removing the trim panel beneath the steering column. If the brake lights are inoperative, the first step is to check the fuse. If the fuse is good, check for voltage to the switch on the feed wire; if no voltage is present, repair the wire between the switch and the fuse box. If voltage is present, depress the brake pedal and check for voltage at the output wire terminal; if no voltage is present, replace the switch. If voltage is present, check for power on the brake light wires at the tail light housings with the brake pedal depressed; if voltage is not present, repair the circuit between the switch and the brake lights. If voltage is present, check for a bad ground by using a jumper wire connected to a good ground to probe the ground wire terminal at the tail light connector; if the brake lights go on, repair the ground circuit. It is also important to consider that the brake light bulbs could be burned out, although the likelihood of all bulbs being burned out is very slim. To remove the switch, first remove the trim panel below the steering column, unplug the electrical connector from the switch, remove the retaining pin, and disengage the brake light switch from the master cylinder pushrod and the pin on the brake pedal, noting the installation of the nylon washers to ensure they are installed the same way during reassembly, which follows the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
How to replace the brake light switch on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Lever is a part of the brake light switch which is arranged on a flange or bracket arranged on the brake pedal support. The first step is to remove the electrical connector that connects the switch followed by the removal of the hairpin retainer spacer which holds the switch in position to the brake pedal arm. After that, you can pull the switch, push rod, nylon washers and the bushing backward to release the switch of the pedal. For installation, the switch is to be placed with the U shaped portion adjacent to the pedal so it lays flat over or under the pin while the bushing seats in the push rod eyelet, washer side toward the retaining pin end. Turn the switch up or down until the master cylinder push rod and bushing become locked and then press the switch down with force. Last, add the plastic washer and the hairpin retainer back before connecting the electrical connector to the switch which should be fitted in a way that it does not interfere with the full range of the movement of the pedal.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the Brake Light Switch on the Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
The brake light switch, also known as the brake pedal position switch or brake light switch, informs the PCM when the brakes are being applied. This switch closes when brakes are applied and opens when they are released, and is mounted on the brake pedal. The brake light circuit is controlled by this switch, and issues such as burned-out bulbs or other circuit problems can cause the engine to idle roughly. Therefore, it's important to check the brake light switch operation when troubleshooting any rough-idle problems. To identify the functions of connector terminals, wiring diagrams can be used. Disconnect the switch connector and connect your voltmeter positive (+) lead to the connector terminal that provides battery positive (B+) voltage to the switch. Connect the negative (-) meter lead to a good ground. Turn the ignition On and read the meter. It should indicate more than 10 volts or close to battery voltage. Connect an ohmmeter to the switch terminals and manually open and close the switch. The meter should alternate from continuity to an open-circuit reading as the switch is opened and closed. Also, check continuity from the switch to the brake light bulbs. Replace any burned-out bulbs or damaged wire looms. Replacement of the switch is covered.
