    Q:
What general information should be considered when servicing an oxygen sensors on the Ford Mustang? Posted by Customer
    A:
When servicing an oxygen sensor, special care is essential due to the permanently attached pigtail and electrical connector that cannot be removed; any damage or removal will ruin the sensor. It is important to keep grease, dirt, and other contaminants away from the electrical connector and the louvered end of the sensor, and cleaning solvents should never be used on an oxygen sensor or air/fuel ratio sensor. Avoid dropping or roughly handling the sensor, and ensure the silicone boot is installed correctly to prevent melting and ensure proper operation. Since oxygen sensors are located in the exhaust system, which contracts when cool, they may be difficult to loosen when the engine is cold; starting the engine for a minute or two can help. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and securely raising the vehicle on jackstands. There are two upstream oxygen sensors on all models, with specific locations depending on the engine type. Locate the desired upstream oxygen sensor, trace the lead to the electrical connector, and disconnect it before using a special oxygen sensor socket to unscrew the sensor. Clean the threads of the sensor bore in the exhaust manifold after removing the old sensor. If reinstalling the old sensor, apply anti-seize compound to the threads; for a new sensor, this is unnecessary as they come pre-coated. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring the sensor is tightened to the specified torque. For downstream oxygen sensors, which are also present in pairs, disconnect the electrical connector before unscrewing and removing the sensor. Clean the threads of the sensor bore in the catalytic converter, apply anti-seize compound if reinstalling the old sensor, and remember that new sensors do not require this. Again, installation is the reverse of removal, with attention to proper torque during tightening.

    Q:
What precautions should be taken when servicing the oxygen sensors on a Ford Taurus? Posted by Customer
    A:
When servicing an oxygen sensor, it is fixed on the exhaust manifold or pipe and becomes very tight to undo; to avoid damaging the sensor or the threads on which it is fixed or screwed, it is advisable to start the engine for sometime, especially for a minute or two. An oxygen sensor comes with a pigtail and an electrical connector that is not supposed to be tampered with and or detached and should not come into contact with grease, dirt among other dirt causing substances on the electrical connector and on the louvered end of the sensor. Cleaning solvents can be used but must not be used on the oxygen sensor because this is one of the delicate parts which must not be dropped or bumped. Check on the placement of the silicone boot on the sensor to avoid cases of melting and other problems in the operations. To replace the sensor remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, lift the front of the car ensuring it is on jack stands and then remove the engine under cover. Find the upstream oxygen sensor and remove its electrical connection, and release the clips before using a wrench or an oxygen sensor socket to remove it. If it is the old sensor to be reinstalled, one needs to coat anti-seize compound on the threads but in a new one, there is a protection of anti-seize compound. Installation is done in a sequence and the torque on the sensor must be tightened to the prescribed standard. The same applies for the downstream oxygen sensor insofar as again you have located and disconnected it and finally unscrewed it, if it is the original sensor then apply the anti-seize compound and tighten the sensor to the required torque specification when next fixing it.
