The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the front wheels and consists of the Pitman arm, idler arm, center link, and adjustable tie-rods. To inspect the steering system, set the wheels straight and raise one side of the vehicle. Wiggle the wheel to check for play and inspect pivot points and ballstuds for looseness. Raise the front of the vehicle and push up and pull down on the idler arm to check for looseness. Check for frozen joints and damaged components. To remove and install the tie-rod, loosen the castle nut, separate the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, and remove the nut. Replace the tie-rod end if necessary, mark the location of the threaded end, and unscrew the tie-rod end. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut securing the inner tie-rod end to the center link. Separate the tie-rod from the center link and remove the old nut. Lubricate the threaded portion of the tie-rod and screw the new tie-rod end into the adjuster sleeve. Connect the tie-rod end to the steering knuckle, tighten the nut, and install a new cotter pin. Insert the tie-rod ballstud into the center link, install a new nut, and tighten it. Tighten the clamp nuts and install the wheel. To remove and install the idler arm, remove the cotter pin and separate the idler arm from the center link. Remove the idler arm-to-frame bolts and install the idler arm assembly, tightening the bolts. Insert the idler arm ballstud into the center link and install a new nut, tightening it. To remove and install the center link, separate the tie-rods from the center link and separate the center link from the idler arm and Pitman arm. Installation is the reverse of removal. To remove and install the Pitman arm, remove the cotter pin and separate the center link from the Pitman arm ballstud. Mark the Pitman arm and steering gear shaft, remove the Pitman arm nut and washer, and remove the Pitman arm with a puller. Inspect the ballstud threads and seals, clean the threads, and install the Pitman arm, aligning the marks.
