Lincoln Mark VII Tie Rod

The Lincoln Mark VII Tie Rod connects the steering gear to the knuckles for effective wheel direction so a driver gets good cornering. Inside the steering linkage, this Tie Rod has ball and socket joints held by tapered studs and shielded with rubber boots, allowing the assembly to swing sideways and follow the vertical suspension travel to keep dependable road feel. During the Mark VII production period, two main linkage layouts appeared. The exposed plate steering box applied on early Lincoln Coupes was of the recirculating-ball type with a parallelogram-type configuration. A Pitman arm moved a center link, which fed adjustable outer Tie Rod assemblies at each wheel. The later Mark VII editions eliminated the Pitman and idler arms and shortened the length of the linkages to switch to rack and pinion hardware. Also, the inner Tie Rod end was moved to thread directly onto the rack to save weight and cut down on wear points. No matter what design your Lincoln utilizes, regular inspections for looseness at every Tie Rod joint keep the distinctive Lincoln Mark VII confidently on course by guarding against wander, shimmy, and uneven tires.

Lincoln Mark VII Tie Rod Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and remove/install the Center Link,Idler Arm,Pitman Arm and Tie Rod for the Lincoln Mark VII?
    A:
The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the wheels via the Pitman arm, idler arm, center link, and adjustable tie-rods. Check the idler arm for looseness by raising the vehicle's front and moving it up and down. Look for damaged components. For tie-rod removal, loosen the castle nut, detach the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, and remove the nut. Replace the tie-rod end if needed and unscrew it. Detach the inner tie-rod end from the center link, lubricate the new tie-rod end, and screw it into the adjuster sleeve. Connect it to the steering knuckle, tighten the nut, and install a new cotter pin. Reconnect the tie-rod to the center link, tighten the clamp nuts, and reinstall the wheel. To replace the idler arm, remove it from the center link, detach the idler arm-to-frame bolts, and install a new assembly, tightening bolts. Insert the idler arm into the center link, tighten, and install a new nut.
