Q:
How to replace a water pump? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to overheating and serious engine damage. To check the operation of the water pump, there are three methods. If the pump is defective, it should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. One way to check is by squeezing the upper radiator hose while the engine is running at normal operating temperature. If the water pump is working properly, a pressure surge should be felt as the hose is released. Water pumps have weep or vent holes, and if there is a failure in the pump seal, coolant will leak from these holes. To check for leaks, a flashlight may be needed to locate the hole on the water pump from underneath. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound at the front of the engine while it's running. Shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down. It's important not to mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. To replace the water pump, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the cooling system. Remove the cooling fan and shroud, as well as the drivebelts and the pulley at the end of the water pump shaft. Loosen the clamps and detach the hoses from the water pump, and remove all accessory brackets. On a 2.3L four-cylinder engine, remove the outer timing belt cover. Remove the bolts and detach the water pump from the engine, making note of the locations of the bolts and studs. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine, and compare the new pump to the old one to ensure they are identical. Remove any old gasket material from the engine and clean the engine and new water pump mating surfaces. Apply a thin coat of RTV gasket sealant to the engine side of the water pump gasket and position the new gasket on the engine. Treat the water pump bolts accordingly, depending on the engine type. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant to the gasket mating surface of the new pump and carefully mate the gasket and pump. Install the remaining bolts, being careful not to overtighten them. Reinstall all parts that were removed for access to the pump. Refill the cooling system and check the drivebelt tension, then run the engine and check for leaks.
