    Q:
What steps should be followed for the removal of the water pump for the 2003 Ford Focus? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following steps should be followed for the removal of the water pump. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts (a strap wrench may be needed to hold the pulley). Remove the auxiliary drivebelt and the water pump pulley. On SPI engines, remove the timing belt, replacing it if necessary due to coolant contamination or approaching scheduled replacement. On non-SPI engines, the water pump can be removed without removing the timing belt, except for Zetec-E engines where the timing belt must be removed to access the water pump housing bolts if replacement is needed. Disconnect the coolant hose and unbolt the timing belt idler pulley before removing the water pump mounting bolts and, if necessary, the water pump housing.

Compare the new pump to the old one and remove old gasket material. Clean the engine and new water pump gasket mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Apply RTV sealant to the engine side of the new gasket and the gasket mating surface of the new pump. Attach the pump and gasket to the engine, threading the bolts in finger-tight. Install the remaining bolts, tighten them evenly in 1/4-turn increments, and reinstall any removed parts. Refill the cooling system and check the drive belt tension before running the engine and checking for leaks.
