    Q:
How to remove and install the Timing Cover in diesel engine on Ford Excursion? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, remove the engine, next the fuel filter/water separator, high pressure oil pump, thermostat and water pump. Therefore, next you have to remove the crankshaft pulley and the oil pump; you then need to take off the oil pan. After that, remove the rest of the Timing Cover bolts; these are mostly the water pump bolts, and then remove the Timing Cover. Remove the Timing Cover gasket and both dowel pins and put the dowel pins in a plastic bag. Remove any gasket material from the Timing Cover and enable the Timing Cover to fit on the mating surface on the block of the engine. Replace the Timing Cover gasket and then fit the Timing Cover screws and tighten to the recommended amount of torque. The rest of the steps are the reversal of the above mentioned process then reinstalling the engine. For the 6.0L and 6.4L engines, in the initial step the drivebelt tensioner assemblies and water pump pulley must be removed. For 6.4L engines only remove the vertical EGR coolant cooler which can be found on the front of the engine after draining all the coolant from it. Subsequently, uninstall the cable bracket and any other brackets that may be in the vicinity of the oil pump, eventually, you will have to do away with the oil pump as well. The upper and the lower crankcases are joined with RTV sealant, and it is useful to use a sharp knife or a razor blade to cut this sealant because if this cover is to be removed without cutting the RTV sealant, damage may occur. In removing the unit, you have to undo the bolts and then pull the cover off then to reinstall the unit do the opposite of removal. In 6.4L engines, use guide pins that are made of bolts with the heads removed and replace with a slotted head screwdriver to align all engine blocks until other bolts can be started.
