Before checking camshaft lobe lift with camshaft in place, the valve covers and rocker arms have to be removed. Place the number one piston at the top dead center on the compression stroke, with the crankshaft sprocket lined up to the formerly stationary pointer on crankshaft front cover while the two pushrods for number one cylinder are parallel and at their lowest position.
