If an overhaul is needed, explore all options before starting the job. New and rebuilt calipers are available on an exchange basis, making the job easier. If rebuilding the calipers, ensure a rebuild kit is available. Always rebuild the calipers in pairs, never just one. A leaking caliper seal is indicated by excessive drop in the master cylinder level or brake fluid running down the inside of a wheel. To rebuild the calipers, remove them along with the brake pads. Unscrew the caliper from the flexible hose and plug the hose to prevent fluid loss or contamination. Clean the exterior of the caliper with brake system cleaner. Use compressed air to eject the piston(s) by applying air pressure at the fluid port while using a wood block or shop rags as a cushion. If the piston(s) is seized, tap around it while applying air pressure. Remove the rubber dust boot and piston seal from the caliper assembly. Wash all parts in brake system cleaner. Inspect the piston and bore for wear or damage, and if necessary, replace the caliper assembly. To reassemble, lubricate a new piston seal with clean brake fluid and place it into the caliper bore groove. Install a new dust boot and ensure it seats correctly in the outer groove of the caliper bore. Coat the piston with clean brake fluid, stretch the lips of the dust boot over the bottom of the piston, and carefully insert the piston into the bore. Push the piston fully into the bore and seat the lip of the boot into the groove in the piston. Reassembly is complete and the unit is ready for installation on the vehicle. After installing the caliper and pads, bleed the brakes. Install the wheel(s) and lower the vehicle to the ground, then tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Carefully check the operation of the brakes before returning the vehicle to normal service.
