    Q:
How to overhaul a wheel cylinder on Ford Bronco? Posted by Customer
    A:
If an overhaul is needed due to fluid leakage or sticky operation, explore all options before starting the job. New wheel cylinders are available, making the job easy. If rebuilding the wheel cylinder is chosen, ensure a rebuild kit is available. Always rebuild both sides at the same time. To inspect, loosen lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the brake drum. Insert a blunt instrument between the wheel cylinder and its rubber boots to check for leaks. If leaking, observe the brake fluid leaking past the boot. A slight wetting of the inside surface of the boot is normal. For removal, if the cylinder is leaking or needs to be removed for other reasons, remove the brake shoe assembly. Clean all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the brake line fitting and remove the mounting bolts. Do not pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and detach it from the brake backing plate. Place it on a clean workbench and plug the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For overhaul, remove the bleeder screw, cups, pistons, boots, and spring assembly from the wheel cylinder body. Clean the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, denatured alcohol, or brake system cleaner. Use compressed air to remove excess fluid and blow out the passages. Check the cylinder bore for corrosion and score marks. Use crocus cloth or a wheel cylinder hone to remove light corrosion and stains. If defects cannot be easily removed or if the bore is scored, replace the cylinder. Lubricate the new cups with brake fluid and assemble the wheel cylinder components, ensuring the cup lips face in. For installation, place the wheel cylinder in position and install the bolts finger tight. Connect the brake line by hand, being careful not to cross-thread the fitting. Tighten the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and brake line fitting. Install the brake shoe and drum assembly. Bleed the brakes and check brake operation before driving the vehicle in traffic.
