It is important that the Headlamps be aimed correctly to avoid blinding the driver of an oncoming vehicle, which could lead to serious accidents or impair visibility. Headlamps should be checked for proper aim every 12 months and whenever a new Headlamp is installed or front-end body work is done. Earlier model sealed beam Headlamps have two spring-loaded adjusting screws, one on top for up-and-down movement and one on the side for left-and-right movement, while later aerodynamically styled halogen Headlamps use one upper adjusting screw for left-and-right movement and an inner corner angle drive mechanism for up-and-down movement. To adjust the Headlamps, a blank wall 25 feet in front of the vehicle and a level floor are needed. Vertical masking tape should be positioned on the wall in line with the vehicle centerline and the centerlines of both Headlamps, along with a horizontal tape line referencing the centerline of all Headlamps. The vehicle should be level, with the gas tank half-full and no unusually heavy load. For low beam adjustment, the high-intensity zone should be set two inches below the horizontal line and two inches to the side of the Headlamp vertical line, away from oncoming traffic, using the appropriate adjusting screw. With high beams on, the high-intensity zone should be vertically centered just below the horizontal line, keeping in mind that low beams are more frequently used and crucial for driver safety. It is advisable to have the Headlamps adjusted by a dealer service department as soon as possible.

If one wants to remove sealed beam Headlamps, one can begin by loosening the screws on the retaining ring and then removing the ring. The front side of the Headlight Bulb should be slid out so that it can be disconnected from the cable assembly plug. On the other hand, one can install a new light bulb by joining the wiring assembly connector with a new bulb and carefully pushing it in its place. Retaining screws are used to attach the retaining ring in place after which the Headlamp trim is put back into position using screws. On the other hand, for composite-type Headlamps open the hood, and lower bulb access cover. Remove the locking ring and pull the bulb and wire harness plug assembly out. Cut the electrical wire harness plug free from the locking ring then remove it. To install a new bulb just need to clean contact surfaces, pass the locking ring over the lamp ends, and locate it in position on the lens door.

The Headlamps in early models are replaceable sealed-beam units containing both high-beam and low-beam filaments; if one filament fails, the entire unit must be replaced. To replace the Headlamp unit, first remove the screws holding the decorative trim ring, taking care not to disturb the Headlamp adjusting screws. For rectangular Headlamp units, remove the four retaining ring screws, while for round units, loosen the retaining ring screws and rotate the ring counterclockwise to release it. Pull the Headlamp unit out enough to access the rear and disconnect the plug. Replace it with a new unit of the same size and type, ensuring proper alignment with the bucket. Install the retaining ring and trim ring if applicable. For halogen bulb Headlamps, ensure the Headlight Switch is off, lift the hood, and locate the bulb at the rear of the headlamp body. Remove the bulb retaining ring by rotating it counterclockwise, then carefully pull the bulb straight out and unplug it from the electrical connector. Insert the new bulb without touching the glass, aligning the grooves in the base with the tabs in the socket, and secure it with the retaining ring. After installation, check for proper operation, noting that a properly aimed headlamp typically does not need re-aiming after bulb replacement. For Headlamp assembly replacement, remove the parking/turn/side indicator light assembly by unscrewing the upper screws and lower nuts, unplug the bulb connectors, and completely remove the assembly. Then, unsnap the upper Headlamp assembly retainers, turn the horizontal adjuster out of the adjusting nut, and remove the Headlamp assembly from the vehicle, reversing the process for installation. Proper adjustment of the Headlamp is necessary after installation.

If you can't align Headlamps with proper equipment, use this method. Park the car 10ft from a dark wall or board. Draw a vertical line on the wall in line with the car's center. Bounce the car to settle suspension, then measure the height from the ground to the Headlamps' center. Draw a horizontal line on the wall at this height. Mark a cross on this line on either side of the vertical line, representing the distance between the light unit and car center. Remove Headlamp rims and switch to full beam. Adjust the screws on each light to align the beam centers with the crosses. Bounce the car again to check alignment and dipswitch operation. Replace the Headlamp rims. This is a temporary fix until proper adjustment can be done.

To replace sealed beam Headlamps, first disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Remove the Headlamp bezel screws and take off the bezel. Next, remove the Headlamp retaining screws without disturbing the adjustment screws, then take out the retainer and pull the Headlamp out enough to disconnect the electrical connector before removing the Headlamp completely. For installation, plug in the electrical connector, position the Headlamp, and secure it with the retainer and screws. Finally, place the Headlamp bezel back and install the retaining screws, ensuring to have the Headlamps adjusted by a dealer service department or service station as soon as possible. For halogen bulb types, open the hood and disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the bulb. Rotate the retaining ring about 1/8-turn counterclockwise and slide it off the base, then carefully pull the bulb straight out of the socket. Insert the new bulb into the socket, ensuring the flat on the plastic base is upward, align the socket locating tabs with the grooves, and push the socket firmly into the base. Slide the retaining ring on and turn it clockwise until it stops, then plug in the electrical connector, test the Headlamp operation, and close the hood. Adjust the Headlamps at a dealer service department or service station at the earliest opportunity.
