Mercury Mariner Throttle Position Sensor

The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on the Mercury Mariner constantly informs the engine computer of the throttle plate's angular position in relation to the fully open position. Every Mercury Mariner now has an updated Throttle Position Sensor that rapidly feeds information to electronic throttle control to prevent lag. This small device is installed on the throttle shaft and converts motion into a changing voltage signal. The ECU compares this signal with temperature and airflow information several times each second to determine exactly how much fuel to inject for a smooth launch, steady cruising, or gentle deceleration. The early Mercury models utilized a Throttle Position Sensor that was of the contact style. This was where there would be a wiper that would sweep across a resistive strip, and wear on that strip would often cause jerky response and poor mileage. Subsequent Mariner versions made use of a non-contact Throttle Position Sensor that employed a rare earth magnet and a Hall Effect or magnetoresistive pickup. This eliminated friction and enhanced durability. When the sensor fails, Mercury Mariner operators may experience hesitation, stalling, or sudden surges, and they should replace the faulty Throttle Position Sensor promptly.

Mercury Mariner Throttle Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Throttle Position Sensor on the Mercury Mariner?
    A:
This procedure applies to 2008 and earlier V6 models and to 2003 through 2008 four-cylinder models; on other models, the TP sensor is part of the throttle body. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. For V6 models, remove the engine cover, noting that the PSP switch is located on the power steering pressure line near the oil filler cap. Next, disconnect the TP sensor electrical connector and unscrew the PSP switch with a wrench. Remove the TP sensor mounting screws and take out the TP sensor. When installing the TP sensor screws on a four-cylinder model, ensure to hand start the screws, as they are self-threading and improper installation could damage the throttle body. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. After reconnecting the battery, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and performance.
