Mercury Mariner Mass Air Flow Sensor

A Mass Air Flow Sensor allows the engine to get the right mix of air and fuel at all times for crisp power and good fuel economy. Whether using the older Vane Meter style or the more prevalent Hot Wire design, this Mass Air Flow Sensor assesses incoming air and sends an accurate signal to the PCM. The PCM then sets injector timing to maintain the ratio's balance at every speed and temperature. An early Mercury SUV uses a Vane Meter with a spring loaded flap attached to a potentiometer in the plastic shroud. Repairs and faults can offer sticky doors plus some slight airflow restriction. Later Mariner years switched to a Hot Wire type. This heats a thin wire and reads current changes from it. It offers a quicker response and less drag. When a Mercury owner notices hesitation, stalling, or a glowing check engine light, inspecting the Mariner Mass Air Flow Sensor for dust or oil may reveal the problem. This is because a wire that has become coated in dust or oil or a flap that is jammed can cause the Mass Air Flow Sensor readings to be incorrect. A closed intake hose line also prevents rogue air that would trick the Mass Air Flow Sensor and upset performance. Regular cleaning helps to keep the Mass Air Flow Sensor in modern Mercury Mariner models sharp.

Mercury Mariner Mass Air Flow Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the Mercury Mariner?
    A:
For 2006 and earlier models, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Next, remove the air intake duct by loosening the hose clamp screw and pulling off the duct, then disconnect the electrical connector from the MAF sensor. After that, disconnect the electrical connector from the MAF sensor and remove the half of the air filter housing that includes the MAF sensor. Detach the MAF sensor from the air filter housing cover by removing the four retaining nuts, then take out the MAF sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the MAF sensor retaining nuts are tightened securely. Once the battery is reconnected, the Powertrain Control Module must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimal driveability and performance. For 2007 and later models, disconnect the sensor wiring harness, remove the two mounting screws, and pull the sensor out of the air duct, with installation being the reverse of removal.
