Mercury Grand Marquis Camshaft

Camshaft in Mercury Grand Marquis cars plays a major role in controlling the intake and exhaust valves on the opening and closing aspect while allowing combustion to occur. Made either from cast iron or hardened steel; the Mercury Camshaft is designed to turn in in tune with the turning of the crankshaft to provide time of events for the valves. Multiple configurations such as over head valve (OHV), single over head cam (SOHC) and double over head cam (DOHC) have been applied, where the DOHC engines have its own cams for intake and exhaust passages. Design of the Grand Marquis Camshaft considerably affects engine performance and determines such aspects as power output and idle quality. Maintenance is important because wear can affect health of valves and ultimately engine efficiency. It is essential to know the type of Mercury Grand Marquis Camshaft and how it works correctly for replacement and effective performance of the vehicle.

We provide a wide range of Mercury Grand Marquis Camshaft at the optimal prices. If you need Mercury Grand Marquis Camshaft, you can shop with confidence on our website. All our OEM parts come with a manufacturer's warranty and are delivered to your doorstep with a fast delivery service.

Mercury Grand Marquis Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install the camshaft on Mercury Grand Marquis?
    A:
To remove the valve cover(s), start by taking off the timing chain(s), camshaft sprocket(s), and spacers, ensuring not to mix up the gears marked as RB (right bank) and LB (left bank), which must return to their original camshaft positions. Measure the thrust clearance of the camshaft(s) with a dial indicator; if it exceeds the specified value, replace the camshaft or the Cylinder Head. There are two distinct "camshaft cap clusters" for each camshaft that must be returned to their original locations, so mark them accordingly. Before removing the camshaft caps and camshafts, rotate the crankshaft 45 degrees counterclockwise from TDC to avoid valve contact. Loosen the bearing cap cluster bolts only 1/4 turn at a time, following the reverse tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand. Lift the camshaft off the cylinder head without mixing up any components, and repeat for the other camshaft. For inspection, visually check the cam lobes and bearing journals for damage, and measure the diameter of each camshaft journal and the lift of each camshaft lobe with a micrometer, replacing any camshaft that does not meet specifications. Check the oil clearance for each camshaft journal by cleaning the surfaces, laying the camshaft in place without lubrication, using Plastigage, and comparing the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on its envelope. If the clearance is too great or any journal diameter is below specifications, replace the camshaft or the cylinder head as necessary. Scrape off the Plastigage carefully to avoid damaging the journals. Before installing the cam cap cluster, ensure the Timing Chain Tensioner oil feed tube and reservoir are clean and unobstructed. For installation, if lash adjusters or camshaft followers were removed, reinstall them in their original locations, apply moly-base grease or camshaft installation lube to the camshaft lobes and bearing journals, and install the camshaft(s). Install the camshaft cap clusters in the correct locations, tightening the bolts in 1/4 turn increments to the specified torque. Rotate the crankshaft 45 degrees clockwise to return to TDC before reinstalling the timing chain(s), camshaft sprockets, tensioners, and timing chain cover, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.
