Firmly apply the parking brake, depress the brake pedal, and try to momentarily operate the starter in each shift lever position; the starter should only operate when the manual shift lever is in PARK or NEUTRAL. If it operates in any other position, adjust the shift cable. If the starter still operates incorrectly after adjustment, the transmission range sensor may be defective. Always replace the shift lever cable retaining clip with a new one. Place the shift lever in NEUTRAL, raise the vehicle on jackstands, and remove the driveshaft. Secure the transmission with a jack, remove the transmission crossmember bolts, and partially lower the transmission to access the shift cable components. Pry the cable end off the transmission shift lever, and for 2010 and earlier models, remove the two shift cable bracket bolts to separate the shift cable and bracket from the transmission. For 2011 and later models, pry out the plastic cable mounting clip to separate the cable from the bracket. Disconnect the cable end from the shift lever by pushing the lock upward and removing the lock from the shift lever. Remove the clip and separate the shift cable from the bracket, then install in reverse order of removal, adjusting the cable afterward. When installing, attach the shift cable to the bracket with a new clip and adjust the cable end to the shift lever, ensuring the shift lever remains stationary. Slide the lock tab down to secure the shift cable end. In the passenger compartment, move the shifter into the 1st position and back into DRIVE. Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, locate the cable adjuster, and release the adjuster mechanism. Rotate the shift lever on the transmission clockwise to its full travel and back three detents to the Drive position. Connect the shift cable to the shift lever and lock the adjuster. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle, verifying that the engine starts only in PARK and NEUTRAL, and that the back-up lights activate in REVERSE. Adjust the cable as necessary to meet these conditions, and it may also be necessary to adjust the transmission range sensor afterwards.
