How to remove and install Crankshaft Pulley and front Crankshaft seal in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on Ford Explorer?

To pull the crankshaft pulley, as a preliminary step, one has to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and the drive belt. Next, pull out the engine cooling fan/shroud assembly and then if equipped remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, early 97 had a separate pulley while the later model came with a combination of pulley/damper. Loosen the crankshaft pulley center bolt using a breaker bar and socket, then remove this bolt, thereby replacing it with a new one as may be necessary. Use a bolt- type washer to remove the pulley/damper from the crankshaft noting that an adapter can be required as the flange is recessed. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal with a seal puller, while avoiding to damage the crankshaft or the seal bore; a metal screwdriver taped is also usable. Check the condition of the seal bore and if there are nicks or gouges take the time to polish them out, check the hub area for abnormal wear or scoring, with repair sleeves in most applications. For installation, clean engine oil should be applied at the lip of the new seal, then with the help of a socket pipe which is slightly smaller in size to that of the seal, drive it into the bore in such a manner that the naked side of the seal is facing into the engine. The sealing surface of the hub must be lubricated clean engine oil and the key way of the pulley should be coated with a small quantity of RTV sealant; the pulley should then be fitted within four minutes of applying the sealant with a special tool that is used to fit the pulley without the need for hammering. Last, replace one center bolt with a new one and tighten it to the prescribed torque, using new pulley bolt and finally carry out the reversal of the above-stated steps of the elimination.
