To remove the timing cover, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, drain the engine oil, and remove the oil filter. Next, take off the drive belt and water pump pulley, followed by the
Crankshaft Pulley, and then remove both valve covers. Drain the cooling system, remove the radiator and water pump, and drain the engine oil again. From below, remove the four front oil pan bolts. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, and on 4.6L engines, disconnect and remove both ignition coil packs, unbolting the ignition coil brackets as well. Remove the bolts securing the power steering pump to the engine, noting that the front lower bolt will not come all the way out; position the pump aside. Unbolt and remove the drive belt tensioner assembly from the right side of the timing cover, then remove the timing cover-to-engine block bolts and the four oil pan-to-timing cover bolts from underneath, ensuring to note the locations of studs and different length bolts. Separate the timing cover from the engine block, using a soft-faced hammer if necessary, taking care not to use excessive force. For installation, clean the mating surfaces of the timing cover, engine block, and cylinder heads, then adhere the new gaskets to the backside of the timing cover. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the junctions of the oil pan-to-engine block and cylinder head-to-engine block, and lubricate the
Timing Chains and crankshaft front oil seal with clean engine oil. Install the timing cover on the engine within five minutes of applying the sealant, ensuring proper positioning, and tighten the bolts in the recommended sequence. Finally, install the remaining parts in reverse order, add the proper type and quantity of engine oil and coolant, run the engine, and check for leaks.
