To dismantle the rocker arms and lash adjusters on the engines that are prior to 2005 with a 5.4L configuration, 2 procedures can be followed but the company recommends the use of a valve spring spacer and a valve spring compressor, these are specialized equipments that are available at auto part shops. The compressor uses the
Camshaft to reduce the pressure on the cam follower while the spacer shields the spring from over collapse. However, more often the camshaft gets withdrawn from the engine to be able to put into access the cam followers. It is also recommended to check that the pistons are not at TDC before compression of the valve springs because they have to be slightly off TDC to hold in the valve springs, this can be done by unscrewing the spark plug and inserting the plastic pen to check the piston positions. Valve spring compressor must be put to compress the spring to allow the removal of the rocker arm and other parts need to be tagged for identification for easy reassembly. Inserting a valve spring spacer is necessary in the coils as a way to protect the valve seal at the time of compression. The hydraulic lash adjuster must be therefore removed cautiously, and if the same has been varnished, then one can use penetrating oil for loosening it. For the engines produced since 2005 and equipped with 5.4L 3V, the operation should be performed in the following order: the rocker arms together with the camshafts and lash adjusters have to be taken out. The ball must be checked for wear or damage especially at the ball tip and ball sides and where the balls are identified to be problematic, it is recommended that, the entire set of balls be replaced so as not to cause a repeat in future. Wear at rocker arm should also be determined particular at the ball socket and at the roller surfaces. It should be noted that before installation lash adjusters should be bled of air when they are standing in oil with the plunger worked with thin wire. The valve stem tip, the rocker arm and the lash adjuster bore must be lubricated with clean engine oil before the lash adjusters and the rocker arms are fitted on the engine. Removal can be said to be the reverse of installation and in the course of the next few moments and after the engine has been re-started there will be certain tapping noises which should clear up after the engine has been warmed up and when it is run at higher RPM.
