    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to remove and install the timing cover in the V8 engine on the Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the timing cover, first disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, drain the engine oil, and remove the oil filter. Next, take off the drive belt and water pump pulley, followed by the crankshaft pulley, and then remove both valve covers. Drain the cooling system, remove the radiator and water pump, and drain the engine oil again. From below, remove the four front oil pan bolts. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, and on 4.6L engines, disconnect and remove both ignition coil packs, unbolting the ignition coil brackets as well. Remove the bolts securing the power steering pump to the engine, noting that the front lower bolt will not come all the way out; position the pump aside. Unbolt and remove the drive belt tensioner assembly from the right side of the timing cover, then remove the timing cover-to-engine block bolts and the four oil pan-to-timing cover bolts from underneath, ensuring to note the locations of studs and different length bolts. Separate the timing cover from the engine block, using a soft-faced hammer if necessary, taking care not to use excessive force. For installation, clean the mating surfaces of the timing cover, engine block, and cylinder heads, then adhere the new gaskets to the backside of the timing cover. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the junctions of the oil pan-to-engine block and cylinder head-to-engine block, and lubricate the timing chains and crankshaft front oil seal with clean engine oil. Install the timing cover on the engine within five minutes of applying the sealant, ensuring proper positioning, and tighten the bolts in the recommended sequence. Finally, install the remaining parts in reverse order, add the proper type and quantity of engine oil and coolant, run the engine, and check for leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the front Timing Cover in a 3.5L and 3.7L V6 engine on Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
    A:
Drain the cooling system and engine oil, and remove the oil filter. If working on a 3.5L engine, remove the intake manifold. Remove the valve covers and the crankshaft pulley. Take off the drivebelt tensioner and all accessory brackets attached to the timing cover, including the drivebelt, idler pulley, alternator, and crankshaft pulley. Remove the alternator bolt and swing the alternator out of the way. Remove the water pump, then take out the timing cover bolts and separate the cover from the engine block, gently prying at the seven spots around the timing cover until it comes off. Clean the gasket mating surfaces with brake system cleaner. While the cover is off, install a new crankshaft front seal and a new radial seal in the center of the timing cover before mounting it. Apply a 1/8-inch bead of RTV sealant to the mating surface of the cover and a 3/16-inch bead to the areas where the oil pan and cylinder heads meet the engine block. Slide the timing cover onto the engine, ensuring the dowel pins position it correctly, and install the bolts finger tight, starting with bolts 1, 2, 7, 8, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21, then tighten them to the specified torque within 35 minutes. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal, then install a new oil filter and add engine oil and coolant. Finally, run the engine and check for leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and install the timing cover in the V6 engine on a Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components, first drain the cooling system, then take out the fan, fan shroud, and water pump, followed by disconnecting the radiator and heater hoses. Next, drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. Remove the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper, loosening the bolt on the belt idler and swinging it aside without removing it. Unbolt and take off all accessory brackets attached to the timing cover, tying the power steering pump aside with hoses still connected. For air-conditioned models, remove the compressor/power steering pump assembly and bracket. Position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke, disconnect the electrical connectors at the camshaft position sensor, knock sensor, and crankshaft position sensor, then remove the front oil pan bolts. Remove the socket-head bolt from the bottom left of the front cover, disconnect the two heater hoses, unbolt the heater outlet tube, and pull it out. Remove the bolts and separate the timing cover from the engine block, gently tapping it with a soft-face hammer if necessary, while ensuring all bolts have been removed to avoid cracking the cover. For installation, use a gasket scraper to clean all surfaces of old gasket material and sealant, then inspect the gear and intermediate shaft inside the front cover. It's advisable to install a new crankshaft front seal while the cover is off, lubricating the seal lip with engine oil. Apply a small bead of RTV sealant along the oil pan-to-block joints, install the front cover gasket, and press it into place, adding more RTV sealant to the block-to-pan joints. Slide the front cover onto the engine, ensuring proper positioning with dowel pins, and install the bolts finger tight, tightening them only after the water pump is installed. Install the oil pan bolts and the remaining parts in reverse order of removal, then add engine oil and coolant before running the engine to check for leaks.
