2014 Ford Taurus Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a cylinder head in four cylinder engine on 2014 Ford Taurus?
A: The fuel system pressure should be relieved, the cable of the negative terminal of the battery should be disconnected and the air filter housing should be removed as well as the charger air cooler inlet and outlet pipes. Go on to strip the alternator off and vice drain the cooling system, then pull off the four coolant hoses attached to the outlet housing at the top end of the cylinder head. First, take off the turbocharger and the coolant expansion tank, then, take off the timing chain. Remove electrical connectors from the Cylinder Head Temperature sensor, the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor and the Camshaft Position sensor. If the camshafts are to be removed it is a good idea to check the valve clearances prior to dismantling to enable new lifters to be acquired if needed prior to commencing the dismantling work. Disconnect and pull the VCT solenoid valves from the front camshaft bearing cap, also disconnect the camshafts and lifters but keep them nicely arranged. Thus it is necessary to unscrew the fuel rail and injectors, to disconnect the hoses from the coolant outlet housing and to take off the intake manifold. If an engine support fixture or hoist can be placed in a position that gets in the way of removing the cylinder head, then use a floor jack and block of wood to lift the engine from below. undo them gradually in the reverse of the sequence applied during tightening; these are torque to yield bolts which have to be discarded once used. Raise the cylinder head from the compartment removing it from the engine; this should however be done carefully for the part is made from a combination of aluminum alloy. If the head is stuck do not try to pry it between the mating surfaces for risk of damaging the sealing surfaces for the gasket. Afterwards, the gasket should be thrown away; one should inspect for locating dowels in both the cylinder block as well as cylinder head and clean those that were removed and then reinsert it. The face of the cylinder head and cylinder block should be free from any foreign material before replacing the head and to remove the gasket and carbon the gasket remover and a hard plastic or wood scraper should be used. During the cleaning process ensure that the aluminum alloy is not scratched and ensure that carbon is not in the oil and water passages especially the lubrication system passages. To ensure that no carbon infiltrates the gap, it is recommended that one grease it, and after you have cleaned each piston, you have to use a small brush to ensure that the engine head block gap is cleansed of all the grease and carbon, and then you wipe with a clean rag. Examine the coming together surfaces so that they have nicks, deep scratch marks or other form of damages, measure the gasket surface with a precision straight edge and a feeler gauge; if either top or bottom surface is warped past the maximum allowable warpage specification, seek counsel from an auto machine shop.. Clean the contacting surfaces through washing and if available provide the alignment dowels to its rightful position. Check that there is no oil or water around the cylinder head bolt holes so as not to cause hydraulic lock which leads to the blocks casting to fracture when tightening the bolt. Place a new gasket on the surface of cylinder block while the 'TOP'mark is at the uppermost. To help with installation make guide studs from two 10mm studs about 90mm long and screw them into the bolt holes at diagonally opposite corners of the cylinder block surface leaving about 70mm of stud above the gasket. Assemble the cylinder head, on the guide studs and dowels and then remove the bolts on the guide studs. Apply engine oil on each thread of the new cylinder head bolts and tighten each until just by hand. The cylinder head bolts require tightening in a prescribed sequence to a prescribed torque and this entails five working stages where the final two stages are the angle torque method. The rest of the installation is done in the reverse sequence to its removal, and then replace the engine oil and filter, and the cooling system, as required.
