2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install Cylinder Head in 4.0L pushrod V6 engine on 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: To work on vehicles built after 1997, start by taking off the cable that connects to the negative battery terminal and drain out the cooling system liquid. Begin by taking off valve covers, rocker arms, push rods, intake manifold, and the drive belt. Keep the air conditioning compressor connected to refrigerant lines, unbolt the compressor bracket, put the power steering pump and bracket aside without taking off the hoses. Remove the cable from the tail end of the wiring harness at the engine head's back. Take off the alternator, ignition coil, both spark plugs, and exhaust manifolds, one by one. Set a T55 Torx driver to unscrew the cylinder head bolts, then throw them away. Replace them all with brand new ones. Take the cylinder head slowly off the engine, pushing with extra force at the most visible part of the casting. Scrub all gasket spots clean before using a tap to run threads through every bolt hole. Before installing new gaskets, look around for leaking coolant or oil, put the FRONT TOP marks in their correct places on the gaskets, and place the gaskets over the dowel pins without sealant. First place the cylinder heads in position and hand-tighten the new bolts. Put sealer on the intake manifold before attaching it, and screw the bolts in by hand. Start by following the exact order to tighten each cylinder head bolt and intake manifold bolt while going in a different direction, going from low to high until you reach the correct tightness. This helps keep everything lined up perfectly and lets the gasket do its job without failing. Rephrase the installation by undoing everything you just did, but this time doing it in reverse order.
