1999 Ford Ranger Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install the camshaft and related components in DOHC four cylinder engine on 1999 Ford Ranger?
A: If you plan to do away with the timing chain you will need to take out the camshaft sprockets, to help you remember what went where you should take an identifying number of the bearing caps and make a timetable out of it to install everything back to the right order. These bearing caps are not interchangeable, and to avoid damaging the engine should be returned to their intended positions. Turn the camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually until the pressure on the valve springs is off evenly. Take out the caps in parallel, record the markings on each and seek the dowels. Even though you will be making some modifications to it, before you pull out the camshafts draw the position of the lobes for the number one cylinder on your chart: Now gently remove the camshafts with care noting the position which has the camshaft position sensor lobe for the intake camshaft. Bring sixteen clean containers labeled 1 to sixteen for the tappets; take each one with the help of valve lapping tool or magnet and put it in the containers. Examine each camshaft for signs of wear and roundness, that is, take the outside diameter of each tappet at a number of points on its length and look for taper or lipping. Camshaft lobes should also be visually inspected and bearing journals should as well be checked for pitting. Take the outside diameter of each journal and check the running clearance with Plastigage and replace worn out parts when necessary. This requires camshaft end play, first, clean the bearing surfaces, then position the camshafts, before using the dial indicator to measure the end play. In reassembly of the engine, lubricate the cylinder head tappet bores and tappets before placing each tappet in its respective bore. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the bearing caps and place all the caps and the camshaft in their designated postions as marked when you removed the assembly. Camshaft alignment tool must then be fitted, and contact surfaces of the tool are to be clean, while applying a thin layer of the anaerobic sealant on the camshafts' front bearing cap mating surfaces. Further, torque the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the said sequence, augmented in a gradual manner to the said values. Remove all solidified sealant and allow enough time to set to so while putting back the camshaft sprockets and timing chain, reassemble in the reverse manner with which they were removed but check the valve clearances before putting down the valve cover.
