    How to remove and install Timing Cover in 3.0L V6 engine on 1998 Ford Ranger?

    To remove the engine from the vehicle for access to the oil pan on 4WD models, start by disconnecting the negative cable at the battery. Drain the oil and coolant, then remove the drivebelt. Next, take off the fan shroud, fan/clutch assembly, water pump pulley, and lower radiator hose. Remove the air cleaner intake duct, then unbolt the air conditioning compressor from its bracket without disconnecting the hoses, lifting it off carefully and securing it aside. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket bolts while keeping the pump and hoses connected, and set the assembly aside. Take out the alternator and its bracket, followed by the water pump, which can remain bolted to the timing cover if desired. Remove the crankshaft pulley and damper, then unbolt the oil pan-to-timing cover bolts and take off the timing cover, keeping track of the variously sized bolts for reinstallation. For installation, replace the front oil seal while the cover is off, driving the old one out from the rear and installing a new seal with a hammer and suitable driver. Reinstall the cover, tightening all fasteners to the specified torque, noting that all 6mm diameter bolts are the same length while the 8mm bolts vary. Use Teflon pipe sealant on the cover bolts that enter the water jacket and apply a light film of oil to the other fasteners. Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps, then refill the cooling system and run the engine, checking for leaks.
