1998 Ford Ranger Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear Crankshaft Seal in a 3.0L V6 engine on a 1998 Ford Ranger?
A: Remove the transmission. On manual transmission equipped vehicles, remove the clutch assembly. Remove the flywheel/driveplate. Using a sharp awl, carefully punch one hole into the Crankshaft Seal between the lip and the engine block, taking care not to scratch the crankshaft. Screw in the threaded end of a slide hammer available at most auto parts stores or equivalent, and pull the seal out with the tool. If the special tool is not available, you may be able to carefully pry out the old seal using a screwdriver, ensuring not to scratch the sealing surfaces. Take care to prevent nicking or scratching the seal bore or crankshaft. Thoroughly clean and inspect the Crankshaft Seal area, then lubricate the new seal with engine oil. Start the seal into its recess with the spring side facing the engine. Press the seal into place with a special tool available at most auto parts stores, or tap it in place using a hammer and hardwood drift or a section of the appropriate size plastic pipe, working slowly around the seal until it is flush with the rear face of the block. Install the flywheel/driveplate, and the remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Run the engine and check for leaks.
