1994 Ford Ranger Crankshaft Pulley Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the crankshaft pulley and front crankshaft seal in a 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on a 1994 Ford Ranger?
A: First, switch off the current source by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal, secondly, take off the drivebelt and the engine cooling fan and shroud. Lift the car and place it on jackstands then next loosen and place aside the power steering fluid cooler nuts without disconnecting the fluid lines while positioning the assembly to one side. Subsequently, unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt and apply a breaker bar and socket to loosen the center bolt of the crankshaft pulley and extract the pulley from the vehicle removing the old bolt and buying a new one for the assembly. Secure the pulley with a strap or chain wrench around the pulley and jamming a shop rag or old driven belt around the pulley and use a bolt type puller to pull the pulley off the crankshaft because the pulley design usually has a recessed shaft opening that may require an adapter. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal by applying a seal puller or screwdriver taped to prevent scratching the crankshaft. Inspect the seal bore for nicks / gouges / wear, check the hub area for wear / scoring / mechanical damage option of repair sleeve. During installation, apply clean engine oil on the lips of the new seal and push or hammer the seal into the bore, simply using a socket or a pipe slightly narrower than the seal regarding the inside diameter but with the open side directed towards the engine. After cleaning the sealing surface of the hub with clean engine oil, fix the crankshaft pulley/damper into its place by using an installation tool, and not by hammering the hub. Torque up and replace a new center bolt to the prescribed torque with silicone sealant on the Woodruff key slot. Lastly, reinstall the program back as indicated below in the uninstallation process to minimize the chances ofvoids showing up.
