    Q:
How to remove and install the instrument cluster on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the instrument cluster in 1991 through 1996 models first you have to disconnected the negative battery cable. Next, undo the screws which secure the instrument cluster and there are four of them. In automatic transmission models remove the screws at the back of the gear indicator eliminating the need of disconnecting it afterwards. Gently twist the instrument cluster assembly toward you to partially remove it from the instrument panel, if installed, push on the quick disconnect plastic connector to remove the speedometer cable. If the cable is tight, remove it from the connection post at the transmission or transfer case. Then, there are the printed circuit electrical connectors that require popping the locking tabs; this also allows for the removal of the instrument cluster assembly. On the cars, produced from 1997, it is required to unscrew the screws, then to pull the cluster to itself and to dismantle the electric sockets, and the shift indicator cable. Reverse of the above steps includes reinsertion of the speedometer head drive if was removed and applying dielectric compound in its hole in the form of a small ball, the vibration dampers should be placed back in their posts if they were removed.

    Q:
Is the removal of the instrument cluster a difficult procedure not recommended for the home mechanic on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is quite complicated to remove the instrument panel as there are many hidden screws and bolts and wires and connectors which has to be located and disconnected before the pulling out of the instrument panel. Before the disconnection process begins one should take notes and digital pictures of the devices indicated above. In the absence of proper skills and experience, and if you cannot enlist the service of an assistant, it is advisable to get this done at dealership. First, secure the column or pin it straight ahead and then unbolt or release the steering wheel. In the engine compartment, there are two retaining tabs that can be released to move aside the fuse box, and also it is necessary to open the hood and disconnect the connectors that are connected to the instrument cluster. Lift out of the boat the hood release handle and parking brake control from the instrument panel and, if so equipped, the center console. It is easier to gain such access so consider to start by taking out the front seats if that is possible. Next, please take off the knee bolster from under the steering column; in the case of a four-wheel-drive car, move the transfer case stick forward. Pull out the Stealth thing near the gear shift, take out the connector above the brake pedal near the booster pushrod and the latent connector above the clutch pedal. Free the steering column from the crossmember and, with considerable caution, lower it to the floor; next, remove the bracket to the immediate right of the accelerator pedal. Disconnect the trim covers at the bottom of the door jam, the kick panels and on the A pillar interior trim on both left and right side of the car. Open the passenger compartment fuse panel located on the left side of the instrument panel, and remove the electrical connectors located at the back of the centre, right and left side of the instrument panel. Located inside the fuse box opening, two bolts anchoring the IP to the cowl must be undone; in addition, there is one bolt at the right bottom corner of the IP as viewed by the pilot. If installed, pull out the sound deadener beneath the lower right of the instrument panel Pull the edge of the defroster grille carefully upward and remove its clips. Turn and secures up the center to nuts that hold the four saddles on the top of the panel, dis-connect, and unmount the last remaining electrical connectors. Make sure that the panel is fully removed from the car prior to lifting it out and for the best results get an assistant. Unlike during removal, installation is done in the reverse order to that used in removal.

    A:
Remove the screws securing the instrument cluster. On automatic transmission models, remove the screws securing the gear indicator to the instrument cluster and slide the indicator down and out of the cluster. It is not necessary to disconnect the indicator.Carefully pull the instrument cluster assembly partially out from the instrument panel. If the vehicle has a speedometer cable, reach under the instrument panel, press on the flat portion of the quick-disconnect plastic connector, and detach the cable from the instrument cluster. Note: If there isn't enough slack in the speedometer cable to pull the cluster out far enough, disconnect the cable at the transmission or transfer case under the vehicle, then push it inside the vehicle while an assistant tugs on the cluster. Once there is enough slack in the cable, reach behind the cluster and disconnect it.Squeeze the locking tabs on the printed circuit electrical connectors, then disconnect them from the printed circuit board.Remove the instrument cluster assembly.
