1998 Ford Ranger Instrument Cluster Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the instrument cluster assembly on 1998 Ford Ranger?
A: To remove the instrument cluster, first disconnect the battery cables after noting the warning. For 1993 and 1994 models, pull out the ashtray, remove the four screws securing the ashtray retaining bracket, and take off the bracket. Next, remove the left and right air conditioning vents along with the instrument cluster bezel. For 1995 and later models, remove the radio, center and lower trim panels, knee bolster, and instrument cluster bezel. Then, remove the screws securing the instrument cluster. In automatic transmission models, take out the screws securing the gear indicator to the instrument cluster and slide the indicator down and out without disconnecting it. Carefully pull the instrument cluster assembly partially out from the instrument panel. If there is a speedometer cable, reach under the instrument panel, press on the flat portion of the quick-disconnect plastic connector, and detach the cable from the instrument cluster. If there isn't enough slack in the speedometer cable, disconnect it at the transmission or transfer case under the vehicle, then push it inside while an assistant tugs on the cluster. Once there is enough slack, reach behind the cluster to disconnect the cable. Squeeze the locking tabs on the printed circuit electrical connectors and disconnect them from the printed circuit board before removing the instrument cluster assembly. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring to apply a 3/16-inch diameter ball of silicone dielectric compound to the drive hole of the speedometer head before installing the cable if applicable.
