Clean the cylinder head with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Compressed air will speed the drying process and ensure that all holes and recessed areas are clean. Note: Decarbonizing chemicals are available and may prove very useful when cleaning cylinder heads and valve train components. They are very caustic and should be used with caution. Be sure to follow the instructions on the container.

Examine pushrod ends for scuffing and bending, check rocker arm studs for damaged threads, and clean cam followers (for OHC engines), inspecting their pads and rollers, and replacing worn or damaged components.

Replacement parts may not be readily available, and the disassembly, inspection, and reconditioning process can be time-consuming and costly. Therefore, it may be more practical and economical to purchase replacement heads.

The heater hose should be disconnected at the pipe fastened at the rear of the right side cylinder head.

The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.

If the valve binds in the guide, push it back into the head and deburr the area around the keeper groove with a fine file or whetstone.
