If a malfunction occurs in the starting circuit, it is important to check several items before assuming that the starter is the problem. If the starter motor operates with the jumper wire, the starter relay is functioning correctly, and the problem may be with the ignition switch, Neutral start switch, starter/clutch switch, or starting circuit wiring. If the starter motor still doesn't operate, the starter relay contacts should be checked by momentarily jumpering across the two large terminals with red wires at the starter relay. If the starter operates, the starter relay is good, and the issue may be with the starter solenoid, requiring a replacement of the starter. If the starter still does not operate, the starter relay should be replaced. If the starter motor cranks the engine at a slow speed, ensure that the battery is fully charged and all terminal connections are clean and tight. Check the connections at the starter relay and battery ground, ensuring that eyelet terminals are not easily rotated by hand. Additionally, check for a short to ground and consider the possibility of a partially seized engine or incorrect viscosity oil.
