Q:
How to check the operation of the fuel pump? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the operation of the fuel pump, switch on the ignition and listen for the sound of the electric motor running beneath the rear seats. The pump should start and run for about one or two seconds before stopping. If the pump runs continuously, it indicates a fault in the electronic control system. On models with a 2.0L Zetec-E engine, listen for fuel return noises from the fuel pressure regulator and feel for fuel pulsing in the regulator and feed hose. If the pump does not run at all, check the fuse, relay, wiring, and the fuel cut-off switch. To check the fuel pressure, connect a fuel pressure gauge in the fuel line between the fuel filter and the fuel rail. Turn off all accessories and switch the ignition key on to run the fuel pump for two seconds. Note the reading on the gauge. If the pressure is too high or too low, there may be issues with the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel lines, or fuel pump. Start the engine and let it idle, checking that the pressure remains within the specified range. If the pressure is too low, check the same components as before. If no problems are found, it is recommended to replace both the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump. For 2.0L Zetec-E engines, follow similar steps but also pinch off the fuel return line and check for restrictions. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the pressure regulator and verify that the pressure decreases. After testing, check that the fuel pressure holds steady and does not drop below the minimum specified. If it does drop, there may be issues with the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or a fuel injector. Finally, relieve the fuel pressure and remove the fuel pressure gauge.

Q:
How should the fuel pump and fuel gauge sender unit be positioned during installation for the 2001 Ford Focus? Posted by Customer
A:
The pump/sender unit should be turned counterclockwise inside the tank to secure it in place. The pump/sender top cover should be aligned with the arrows on the tank and unit before installation. Additionally, ensure that the unit is firmly located before proceeding with the installation.
