The battery cable(s) must be unplugged and the cooling system drained to change the water pump. Also, the fan, fan shroud, and water pump pulley must also be removed if necessary. Furthermore, the drivebelt and pulley are taken off, then the water pump retaining bolts are removed. Afterward, wipe away all traces of a gasket from the water pump and cylinder block; examine an O-ring and sealing surface; lubricate a new O-ring with antifreeze. For 7.3L diesel engines only, remove the thermostat, heater hose, any applicable sensors or harnesses. After that, clean the gasket surfaces and install a new gasket tightening the bolts to specified torque. Finally, reassemble everything in reverse order, fill the cooling system with antifreeze, start it up, and check for leaks while watching the coolant level in the expansion tank.
