Q:
What are some common issues with the mechanical fuel pump in Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
A:
The mechanical fuel pump in carburetor equipped models may experience issues such as delivering no fuel or insufficient fuel for high engine speeds or loads. A lean condition, characterized by fuel starvation, can be caused by a faulty fuel pump, clogged carburetor float bowl filter, malfunctioning carburetor, leaking or restricted fuel lines and hoses, or electrical system problems. To troubleshoot, check for loose fuel pump mounting bolts and tighten them if necessary, inspect for loose or missing fuel line mounting clips and tighten them, and check for a worn or sticking fuel pump pushrod. Before assuming a fuel pump is defective, ensure the tank has fuel, check the fuel filter for blockage and replace if needed, inspect rubber hoses for kinks and cracks, check for fuel leaks in fuel lines and connections, and examine the fuel pump diaphragm crimp and breather hole for signs of leakage. To test the fuel pump's output capacity, disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter inlet, attach a section of rubber fuel hose to the line and route it into a gasoline container, crank the engine and check if the fuel pump delivers at least 1/3-pint of fuel. If the output is inadequate, repeat the test with a remote fuel supply to identify potential issues with the in-tank filter or fuel hose. For a pressure test, connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel filter end of the line, start the engine and read the pressure after ten seconds, comparing it to the specified pressure. If the pump pressure is not as specified, replace the fuel pump. In the case of an electric fuel pump, a malfunction may result in a loss of fuel flow and pressure. To diagnose, disconnect the wire harness from the pump(s), attach a fused jumper between the battery and the pump, and listen for pump operation. If the pump is not running, replace it. If it is running, seek professional assistance to check the fuel pump circuit.

Q:
How do you replace a mechanical fuel pump on Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace a mechanical fuel pump on carburetor equipped models, start by loosening the threaded fuel line fittings at the pump with the proper size wrench. Retighten them until they're snug. Do not remove the lines yet. Loosen the mounting bolts and use your hands to loosen the pump from the block. If it's stuck, have an assistant operate the starter while you keep one hand on the pump. Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump using a backup wrench. Remove the fuel pump bolts and detach the pump and gasket. Clean the engine block and pump mating surfaces. Insert the bolts through the pump and place the new gasket in position. Position the fuel pump on the block and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Attach the fuel lines to the pump and check for fuel leaks. For electric in-tank fuel pump on fuel-injected models, relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel tank. Tap the lock ring counterclockwise until it's loose. Pull the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank and remove the old lock ring gasket. Clean the fuel pump mounting flange and the tank mounting surface. Installation is the reverse of removal. For electric chassis-mount fuel pump on fuel-injected models, depressurize the fuel system and raise the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the inlet and outlet lines from the fuel pump. Remove the fuel pump from the assembly and the electrical wiring harness. When installing, make sure the fittings on the pump have gaskets in place and are properly positioned. Wrap the fuel pump retaining ring around the fuel pump and insert it into the bracket. Connect the fuel lines and the electrical harness connector. Start the vehicle, check for proper operation of the pump, and look for leaks.
