    Q:
How should the piston ring set end gaps be checked and the rings installed on Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
    A:
When the service of replacing the piston rings is being done ensure that while installing the new piston rings the following are done; The ring end gaps and the piston ring side clearance must have been checked. Place the piston/connecting rod assemblies and the new ring sets on the engine counterparts of the piston and cylinder while taking the end gap measurement before the assembly of the engine. Place the first cylinder in a manner perpendicular to the cylinder walls, by forcing its top ring with the top of the piston in near the bottom of the cylinder. To determine the end gap, place feeler gauges across the ends of the ring and continue adjusting until the ring moves with resistance, but does not jam. Check the measured gap against the requirement; if need be check on the right rings to be used. End gap is again not a concern if it is not over 0.040-inch and check for interchangeability of the rings wit the engine. Do the same for all the rings in the first cylinder and the subsequent cylinders making sure that you maintain rings, pistons, and cylinders pairs. When the end gaps are set, assemble the rings on the pistons in the following order: oil control ring made of three parts. The spacer/expander should be fit into the groove; next, under pressure to avoid any injury, the side rail, then the lower side rail, then the upper side rail. After the installation of the oil ring components, the side rails must be rotated freely on both grooves. Then, place the middle ring on and make sure that the identification mark is up and use the piston ring installation tool in such a way that you do not expand the ring. Last, insert the top ring to the piston in the same way, making a mark on it facing up and go on the next pistons and their rings.

    Q:
How should the Piston Ring Set be installed and what steps need to be followed for checking and ensuring proper end gaps on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before installing the new piston rings, the ring end gaps must be checked, assuming that the piston ring side clearance has been verified correct. Lay out the piston/connecting rod assemblies and the new ring sets to match them with the same piston and cylinder during the end gap measurement and engine assembly. Insert the top ring into the first cylinder, ensuring it is square with the cylinder walls by pushing it in with the top of the piston, positioning it near the bottom of the cylinder. To measure the end gap, slip feeler gauges between the ends of the ring until a gauge equal to the gap width is found, ensuring the feeler gauge slides between the ring ends with slight drag. Compare the measurement to the specifications; if the gap is larger or smaller than specified, double-check the rings for correctness. Excess end gap isn't critical unless it exceeds 0.040-inch, so verify the correct rings for your engine. Repeat the procedure for each ring in the first cylinder and the remaining cylinders, keeping rings, pistons, and cylinders matched. Once the ring end gaps have been checked and corrected, install the rings on the pistons, starting with the oil control ring, which consists of three components. Slip the spacer/expander into the groove, followed by the lower side rail, ensuring not to use a piston ring installation tool to avoid damage. Install the upper side rail in the same manner and check that both side rails can turn smoothly in the ring groove. Next, install the middle ring, ensuring the stamped mark faces up, and use a piston ring installation tool to slide it into the middle groove. Finally, install the top ring in the same manner, ensuring the mark is facing up, and repeat the procedure for the remaining pistons and rings.
