To remove the brake caliper, start by removing about one-third of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Then, loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels and chock the rear wheels. Set the parking brake and raise the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the wheels and use a C-clamp to push the caliper piston back into the cylinder bore. For early model "key" retainer type calipers, remove the retaining bolt and tap the caliper retaining key and spring out of the anchor plate. Pivot the caliper off the rotor and suspend it with wire. For late model "rail slider" retainer type calipers, squeeze the outer retaining tab on the upper caliper pin and pry the pin out using a screwdriver. Repeat this process on the lower caliper pin and lift the caliper assembly away from the spindle. Suspend the caliper with wire. For late model "pin slider" retainer type calipers, remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper from the brake disc. Suspend the caliper with wire. To replace the brake pads, remove the inner pad and anti-rattle clip from the anchor plate. Detach the outer pad from the caliper and retract the caliper piston using a C-clamp. Clean the caliper support, caliper, and pads and install the new pads. For single-piston calipers, install the outer pad on the caliper and the inner pad on the spindle anchor plate. For dual-piston calipers, install both pads into the caliper and install the anti-rattle spring. To install the caliper, follow the reverse steps for each caliper type. Finally, install the wheels, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Press the brake pedal several times before driving to seat the brake pads.
