Your headlights must be adjusted correctly to protect drivers and keep you seeing clearly while you drive. They must get tested one per year and again if you place new light bulbs or fix the front part of the car. In the meantime, we have a process to adjust the headlights while waiting for a professional shop to fix them correctly. First, identify the location of the adjustment screws: If you have halogen bulb headlights, the adjustment screws are on top of each housing; for sealed beam headlights, you can easily spot the inboard and upper adjustment screws on the outside. Following three simple steps will help you adjust your headlights: place tape on a flat floor, put a blank wall vertically, and ensure everything is level. Place two strips of tape vertically on the wall from the vehicle's middle to the center lights; then add a horizontal line to help you match up the sides. Keep the car 25 feet from the wall, with 1/2 tank of gas, no heavy cargo, and make sure it's parked level. When adjusting low beams, place the brightest spot two inches below and to the right of the vertical light line, away from oncoming traffic, by turning the screws. Using high-beam light, place the brightest part of the pattern right under the horizontal guide. When you can't avoid making changes, put low beams first to prevent accidents. Have a service pro at a dealer or a gas station fix your headlights as soon as you can.
