Fuel filters in carbureted models should be replaced according to the maintenance interval suggestions and when a blockage in the fuel line occurs due to excessive foreign material in the fuel.

A valve is located on the throttle body for this purpose. The valve can be located by removing the air cleaner.

For a 2.3L engine frame-mounted inline fuel filter, pinch off the fuel hose to the rear of the inline filter using a rubber-coated clamp or other suitable device to prevent fuel from siphoning from the tank. Remove the two hose clamps closest to the inline filter, then carefully disconnect the fuel lines from the filter. Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one, ensuring that the flow direction matches the markings on the filter. Reattach the hose clamps securely and remove the clamp from the fuel hose. This procedure is necessary to avoid fuel spillage and ensure a safe replacement process, as well as to maintain proper fuel system pressure during the operation.

New clips must be used when reattaching the hoses to the new filter.

Remove the gas cap, then reinstall it after relieving the fuel system pressure.

If necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands with the front end slightly higher than the rear.

Position the front end of the vehicle higher than the rear to prevent fuel siphoning.

To replace the fuel filter on carbureted models, start by removing the air cleaner assembly and placing rags under the fuel inlet fittings to catch any spilled fuel.

The fuel filter is located under the vehicle on the inside of either the left or right frame rail, near the fuel tank.

Reconnect the hoses with hairpin clips, ensuring they are securely attached. Double-check for secure attachment, then start the engine and inspect for any fuel leaks.
